Laser Cutting Explained: What It Is and Which Materials We Cut

Laser cutting is one of the most precise and efficient ways to process sheet metal — whether you need one part or a full production run. In this article, we’ll explain how our in-house 3kW fibre laser works, what types of metal we can cut, and why laser cutting is often the best choice compared to plasma or CO₂ methods. We’ll also cover the benefits of working with us — including same-day turnaround and free local delivery (Poole and Bournemouth).

What Is Laser Cutting?
Laser cutting is a thermal process that uses a concentrated beam of light to cut through metal. The laser melts or vaporises the material along a precisely controlled path, producing a clean and accurate cut edge — often with no need for post-processing.
At our facility, we use a fibre laser, which is faster and more efficient than older COâ‚‚ technology. It delivers exceptional cutting quality, especially on thin to medium-thickness metal sheets.
How Does Fibre Laser Cutting Work?
Our 3kW fibre laser system directs a high-powered laser beam through optical components and a CNC-controlled cutting head. This beam is focused into a tiny point — just a fraction of a millimetre wide — which generates enough energy to instantly melt or burn through the metal.
Because the laser is non-contact, there’s no mechanical wear on the material, and there's very little heat distortion — even on complex, detailed parts.
Which Materials Can We Cut?
We specialise in cutting a wide range of common metals. Our maximum cutting capacities are:
Mild steel: up to 20mm
Stainless steel: up to 10mm
Aluminium: up to 8mm
🔔 Note: We do not cut non-metallic materials such as wood, plastics, or composites.
If you’re unsure whether your material can be cut, feel free to send us a message — we’re happy to advise.
How Accurate Is Laser Cutting?
Fibre laser cutting is known for its high precision. We offer cutting tolerances of ±0.2mm, making it suitable for applications where accuracy is critical — including tight-fitting parts, assemblies, brackets, and custom components.
The clean-cut edges often eliminate the need for grinding, sanding, or secondary operations.
Same-Day Laser Cutting Service
Time-sensitive project? We offer same-day turnaround for many jobs, depending on complexity and quantity. If you have CAD or DXF files ready, we can often begin cutting immediately.
This is ideal for local fabricators, manufacturers, or tradespeople who need fast and reliable laser cut parts.
Fibre Laser vs. Plasma and CO₂ – What’s the Difference?
While there are other cutting methods, fibre laser cutting offers clear advantages:
Feature | Fibre Laser | Plasma | COâ‚‚ Laser |
Cutting Precision | ★★★★★ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
Edge Quality | ★★★★★ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★☆☆☆ |
Speed (thin material) | ★★★★★ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
Operating Cost | ★★★★☆ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★☆☆☆☆ |
Maintenance | ★★★★☆ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★☆☆☆ |
In short, fibre lasers are faster, cleaner, and more cost-efficient, especially on stainless steel and aluminium.
Typical Applications of Laser Cut Sheet Metal
Laser cutting is widely used in:
Metal fabrication and welding shops
Automotive and motorsport components
Machine parts and industrial enclosures
Architectural metalwork
Custom brackets, signage, and prototypes
